Who this course is for
This course is designed for rail industry professionals responsible for or involved in rail safety, incident investigation, regulatory reporting, or workplace health and safety (WHS). It equips participants with principles and skills that can be applied to rail safety investigations as well as WHS-related incidents, making it highly versatile and practical for a range of operational contexts.

Time commitment
Students will be enrolled for 3 months and have access to Alium Works’ Learning Management System (LMS), where they access course materials, quizzes, activities, and assessments.
Delivered over 3 days in an interactive, virtual classroom setting, this module is led by an experienced rail safety trainer and accessible to participants nationwide. The live online format allows rail professionals to engage directly with the trainer, participate in discussions, and gain insights tailored to address current industry challenges.
After the 3-day theory phase, learners will have access to 1-on-1 support and group calls with the trainer.
This initial 3-day period covers the course’s core theoretical content. To allow time for assessments to be completed, 3 months are provided.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
Where RPL is sought, please note that RPL recognises prior learning. It is not recognition of current competency and requires the same level of evidence as per a usual assessment pathway.
As such, RPL may be applied for through the provision of evidence that the student has sufficient and extensive industry experience in the field.

Master the art of conducting thorough rail safety incident investigations following industry standards and regulations. This unit includes planning, data collection, analysis, and preparing incident reports, with reference resources provided directly by the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB).
TLIE4030 - Prepare Rail Safety Reports
Develop the capability to create comprehensive rail safety reports that meet all legislative, regulatory, and organisational requirements. This unit covers every aspect of report preparation, from data interpretation to documentation, ensuring reports are compliant and informative.
TLIF0054 - Respond to Notifiable Rail Safety Occurrences
Gain essential skills for responding promptly and effectively to notifiable incidents in line with Rail Safety National Law (RSNL). This unit covers identifying, documenting, and investigating incidents, both internally and in coordination with external agencies.
Course Entry Requirements
To be eligible for enrolment at Alium Works into the Certificate IV in Rail Safety Management qualification, you must:
- 01. Have prior experience working in the rail industry
- 02. Be 18 years of age or older at the time of enrolment
- 03. Be technologically literate and have access to Microsoft Office suite or equivalent
- 04. Have continuous access to a reliable internet connection
- 05. Have, or be willing to obtain, a USI number
- 06. Demonstrate English literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to at least Year 10 level
**While there are no formal prerequisites for this module, students with existing rail industry experience or familiarity with network rules and industry standards tend to achieve better outcomes.**
